What is the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS)?
The Patient Assisted Travel Scheme provides financial assistance to country residents travelling to receive healthcare such as cancer treatment. PATS offers subsidised accommodation costs for country residents in a WA Country health Service region who need to travel more than 100kms to access medical services.
PATS is funded by the Department of Health and Royalties for Regions to provide a subsidy to eligible patients. It does not cover the costs of travel and accommodation entirely but is aims to make specialist health services more accessible to people living in rural and remote Western Australia. In 2013-2014 alone, the PATS was able to subsidise 90,000+ patient trips.
